Excess Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)

Hyperhidrosis can affect day-to-day life far more than people often realise. When sweating is excessive and persistent, treatment may help reduce symptoms and improve confidence, but because this treatment uses prescription-only medicine it should be approached in the same careful, consultation-led way as your anti-wrinkle treatment page.

Excess sweating (hyperhidrosis)

A medical problem that can have a real practical and social impact.

Hyperhidrosis means sweating more than the body needs for temperature control. It can affect the whole body or more localised areas, and it can interfere with clothing choices, work, social situations and confidence.

For some patients, simple measures such as stronger antiperspirants or pharmacy treatment may help. NHS guidance notes that you can also see a GP if self-care is not helping, particularly if the problem has lasted for at least six months or is affecting normal daily life

What treatment usually involves

A mapped treatment area and a series of small injections

  • Usually a short outpatient appointment
  • The treatment area is mapped first
  • Small injections placed across the sweating area
  • Underarms are the most commonly treated site
  • Effect usually develops over the first week
