Arm Reduction (Brachioplasty)

Excess skin on the upper arm is a common concern following significant weight loss and cannot be addressed through exercise alone. Brachioplasty produces a significant improvement in upper arm contour, though the trade-off is a scar along the inner arm.

About the Procedure

Brachioplasty removes excess skin and fat from the inner aspect of the upper arm, from the axilla (armpit) to the elbow. The resulting scar runs along the inner arm and, while permanent, is positioned so as not to be visible when the arm is at rest.

In patients where excess fat rather than skin is the primary concern, liposuction alone may produce satisfactory improvement without the need for a skin excision scar. This will be assessed at consultation.

The Procedure

Surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and typically takes one to two hours. Day case surgery is usual, though an overnight stay is sometimes recommended.

Recovery

A compression garment is worn following surgery. Most patients return to desk-based work within one to two weeks. Arm movements should be kept gentle for the first two weeks to protect the wound. Strenuous upper body activity should be avoided for six weeks.

Risks

Risks include bleeding, infection, wound healing complications, and scarring. The scar along the inner arm is a significant and permanent feature of this procedure and will be discussed in detail at consultation. All risks will be covered fully before any decision is made.
