Liposuction

Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures worldwide. It is not a treatment for obesity or a substitute for weight loss, but it is highly effective at addressing stubborn localised fat deposits that persist despite a healthy lifestyle.

About the Procedure

Liposuction removes excess fat deposits using a fine cannula passed through small incisions in the skin. The technique used is tumescent liposuction, in which a solution is first infiltrated into the target area to reduce bleeding and aid fat removal. The small incisions are closed with sutures and are inconspicuous once healed.

Commonly treated areas include the abdomen, flanks, thighs, upper arms, knees, and back. Multiple areas can be treated in a single procedure. Liposuction is frequently performed alongside other procedures such as abdominoplasty or brachioplasty.

It is important to understand that liposuction addresses fat, not loose or excess skin. In patients with significant skin laxity, a skin excision procedure may be more appropriate or may be recommended in addition to liposuction.

The Procedure

Surgery is performed under general anaesthetic. Operating time depends on the number of areas treated. Day case surgery is usual for limited areas; an overnight stay may be recommended for more extensive procedures.

Recovery

A compression garment is worn for six weeks following surgery. Bruising and swelling are expected and will settle progressively over several weeks. Most patients return to desk-based work within one to two weeks. Strenuous activity should be avoided for six weeks. Final results become apparent as swelling fully resolves, typically over three to six months.

Risks

Risks include bruising, swelling, contour irregularities, changes in skin sensation, and, rarely, infection or fluid collections. All risks will be discussed in full at your consultation.
