About the Procedure
Breast reduction surgery (reduction mammaplasty) removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to reduce breast size and reshape the breast into a more proportionate and aesthetically pleasing form. The nipple and areola are repositioned at the same time, and the areola can be reduced in size if required.
The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic and typically takes two to three hours. Most patients stay overnight.
Incision Patterns
The extent of scarring depends on the degree of reduction required. The most commonly used technique involves an incision around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease, and along the breast crease itself. In some cases a shorter scar pattern is possible. The options will be discussed at your consultation based on your anatomy and the reduction required.
Recovery
A supportive post-surgical bra is worn continuously for the first six weeks. Most patients are comfortable returning to desk-based work within two weeks. Strenuous activity should be avoided for six weeks. Some swelling and bruising is expected in the first few weeks; final results become apparent as swelling settles over several months.
Risks
As with all surgery, risks include bleeding, infection, and adverse scarring. Risks specific to breast reduction include changes in nipple sensation and, rarely, difficulties with wound healing, particularly in the area where the incisions meet. These risks will be discussed in full at your consultation.
