Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, and the natural effects of ageing can all cause the breasts to lose their shape and position. Mastopexy restores breast contour by removing excess skin and reshaping the underlying tissue, without the need for implants.

About the Procedure

Mastopexy lifts and reshapes the breast by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue. The nipple and areola are repositioned to a higher, more natural position. The procedure does not significantly change breast volume; patients who wish to increase size at the same time may be suitable for augmentation mastopexy, which combines a lift with the placement of implants.

Surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and typically takes one and a half to two hours. Most patients are discharged the same day, though an overnight stay is sometimes recommended.

Incision Patterns

The incision pattern used depends on the degree of ptosis (drooping) present and the amount of skin to be removed. Options range from a scar around the areola alone, to one that extends vertically down to the breast crease, to a full anchor-shaped incision that also runs along the crease. The most appropriate technique will be discussed at your consultation following assessment of your anatomy.

Recovery

Dressings are applied to the incisions following surgery. A supportive bra should be worn continuously for six weeks. Most patients return to desk-based work within one to two weeks. Strenuous activity should be avoided for six weeks. Scars will continue to mature and fade over twelve to eighteen months.

Risks

Risks include bleeding, infection, changes in nipple sensation, asymmetry, and scarring. Wound healing complications can occur, particularly at the junction of the incisions. All risks will be discussed in full at consultation.
